Network for a Healthy California – Latino Campaign

The Network for a Healthy California – Latino Campaign is a public health initiative led by the California Department of Health Services and administered by the Public Health Institute.

Mission:
To empower low-income Latino adults ages 18-54 years old and their families to consume the recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables and enjoy physical activity every day to 30 minutes for adults and 60 minutes for school age children.

Goal:
The Network for a Healthy California – Latino Campaign objectives are designed to reduce the risks of chronic diseases, especially cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.

Latino Health Statistics:

  • Among California Latinos, heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabestes account for nearly 60% of all deaths.
  • More than 40% of California Latino men and women are overweight while 29% are obese.
  • The CDC estimates that 10% of california Latinos have diabetes.
  • 18% of California Latinos have been diagnosed with hypertension.
  • Only 43% of California Latino adults engage in 30 minutes of moderate physical activity five days a week, while about 27% participate in 20 minutes of vigorous physical activity at least three times a week.

Retail Channel:
Food demonstrations and merchandising activities are conducted at qualifying grocery stores. Point-of-sale signs and food deomonstrations remind event participants how to include more fruits and vegetables in their daily meals and snacks.

Festival & other community events:
Community Health Leaders communicate key health messages that promote eating the recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables and enjoying physical activity at Latino festivals and other community events.

Farmers & flea Market channel:
Community health leaders demonstrate quick and easy fruit and vegetable recipes.

Community based organizations & direct health service provider channel:
5 A DayThe Network for a Healthy California – Latino Campaign seeks to establish partnerships with organizations that serve the FSNE-elgible Latino adults, their families and those who are interested in adopting the toolkit, as part of their health and nutrition education activites, and health promotion.
