Our Mission

Empowering low-income African American families to make healthy food choices and be physically active through education, advocacy, and community empowerment.

About the Program:

  • The Network for a Healthy California African American Campaign is designed to improve health in the low-income African American community by providing education about healthy eating and physical activity and empowering it with positive strategies for creating healthier communities.
  • The African American Campaign works to reduce the rates of chronic disease and promote food security among low-income Californians.
  • It empowers low-income families to eat fruits and vegetables and be physically active through churches, community-based organizations, direct health service providers, farmer’s markets, festivals, grocery stores, and media.

What We Do:

  • Fruit and Vegetable Community Toolbox for Community Educators:  We train community educators to use a tested set of lessons and supporting handouts, resources, and evaluation tools for teaching low-income adults how to make healthy food choices and promote the recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables and enjoying physical activity every day.
  • Body & Soul Program:  We promote this faith-based program that empowers church members to eat more fruits and vegetables for better health every day at their place of worship.
  • Retail Program:  We do food demonstrations and provide merchandising materials at qualifying grocery stores to encourage eating more healthy fruits and vegetables.
  • African American Campaign Advisory Group:  We meet with local partners of organizations, community agencies, faith organizations, and community members to promote increased fruit and vegetable consumption and daily physical activity.
  • Festivals and Community Events:  Contact us with information about your upcoming event.
